Amar Nath Shaw has always wanted to swim against the tide, be it choosing Design over Engineering or building a prestigious career despite all odds. Perhaps, it is this persistence and dedication that has seen the meteoric rise of Amar from being a humble 12th grade student in Kolkata to becoming a UX Designer for Nokia in Helsinki, Finland

For the uninitiated, User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) are two integral factors of the ongoing revolution in the web industry. And in order to keep the users engaged to devices, be it smartphones or laptops, UX designers are required to create cutting-edge technology. The ongoing web revolution also makes UI/UX designing one of the most lucrative careers in the IT industry. And Amar is right there, riding the crest!

His design journey

Amar was studying in school in Kolkata, in an era, when every parent insisted on their child opting for the IITs and the IIMs as career choice. However, young Amar was already dreaming of pursuing a Design course at the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad. However, without proper advice, guidance and training, he realized that cracking the NID entrance examination was going to be an impossible feat. Just when he was thinking hard about what to do to address the problem, his brother recommended afdindia – an institute dedicated to guiding and mentoring interested students to clear entrance exams to such reputed institutions like NID and NIFT.

Preparing with afdindia

After listening to his brother’s advice, Amar enrolled for the postal coaching program in 2014. With the help of their study materials and guidance, he prepared for the first round of NID examination. Speaking about that phase, he says, “This course helped strengthen my lateral thinking skills, visualization ability, sense of color and ability for problem solving & conceptualization, all of which helped me to clear the 1st phase of the NID exam.” For the 2nd phase of NID admission test, which comprised of a Studio Test, Portfolio preparation and Interview training, Amar travelled to Mumbai to attend the classes. In Dadar, Mumbai, he first met Mr. Vinny Thomas and Ms. Julie James, the founders of afdindia. He was pleasantly surprised to receive a scholarship too, in addition to being prepared for the studio test.

Clearing NID and surging ahead

With his hard work, dedication and result-oriented mentoring of afdindia, Amar cleared the NID exams with flying colors. About that phase, he says, “From here, there was nothing stopping my journey as a designer.” He credits afdindia for helping him achieve his dream of a Design career. He elaborates, “I will always be grateful to afdindia, for the comprehensive training and guidance that paved the way for my successful career in design.”

Road to UX design

When he was in the second year at NID, he got a chance to go to Germany as an exchange student. That visit widened his horizons. Then in the third year, he also did a 3-month internship in Paris. After graduating in 2009, he worked as a designer in TI Cycles, Murugappa Group. During that time, he spent his weekends tutoring design school aspirants at afdindia, Chennai. In his own words, “After working for a few years, in 2013, I decided to go for higher studies. I wanted to learn and explore something new. However, one criterion I had in mind while applying to foreign universities was that the fee should be affordable. I didn’t want to take huge loans to study abroad. Then I came across Aalto University in Finland, which did not require tuition fees. I could afford the expenses with my savings.”

Speaking about his current placement, he says, “User experience is something that has come up in the last 15 years. Today, everything is on a digital platform. Be it websites or Apps companies, everyone is going digital. UI/UX design is how the users will experience a product from the beginning to the end.”

Amar’s advice

2019年火爆棋牌平台Amar has just two pieces of advice for aspiring design students. One is to have an “inclination towards creativity” and the other is to “broaden your knowledge by reading and exposing yourself to new experiences and concepts.”
